Smith of Wootton Major – 1967 Proof Copy with 1567 Misprint

This proof copy shows age-related wear and toning to the paper wrappers, with visible brown spots on the front wrapper and preliminary leaves and a pencil notation on a blank leaf. These marks qualify the original approximately fine assessment.
In the publisher's smooth paper wraps, decorated in black on the front cover, with the review stamp to the front wrap, in blue ink:
"Book proof - Published Price - 7/6 - Publication Date - (stamped secondarily in black) 9. Nov. 1967."

The accompanying dealer catalogue entry, reproduced in the photographs, records this as formerly Edward J. Brown's copy, purchased through David Aronovitz of The Fine Books Company (ABAA). It also identifies the proof as "undoubtedly the copy of Miss Amy Ronald", a long-time correspondent of Tolkien. This earlier ownership is recorded on the authority of that catalogue entry; the photographed pencil notation is not identified as her signature.
