Tom Bombadil and the River Daughter by Ted Nasmith

Tom Bombadil and the River Daughter is an original work of Ted Nasmith created for The Lord of the Rings collectible plate series from The Danbury Mint, England. It was inspired by the poem ‘The Adventures of Tom Bombadil’ by JRR Tolkien; for Ted Nasmith as pure an expression of ‘faerie’ as one might find among his writings.
In this work, Ted wanted to capture Tom’s delight in and fondness for Goldberry (the River Daughter of the title), as well as the enchantment of the Withywindle Valley under its sun-dappled Willow trees. He wanted to evoke the warmth of a summer day, with dragonflies darting to and fro, wind in the rustling leaves, and goldfish sunning in the green, cool depths of the pool.
The medium is gouache on illustration board, and the size is roughly 13” wide, in circular format.

This piece is listed starting at £1250 and other similar pieces from the series of 12 plates sold for £4000 each, this is the last one remaining and was not previously available for sale with the other illustrations of the plate series.

Luthien Escapes Upon Huan

About this painting Ted Nasmith said:

"Luthien Escapes Upon Huan has something of a history. Originally it started as a thumbnail sketch as part of a series of drawings I made upon re-reading The Silmarillion in the 1990s. After I was approached about illustrating the book, it was among the sketches favoured by Christopher Tolkien, and was duly developed for inclusion. A smaller version was executed in colour, but then for the ‘final’ version, the image was re-composed in vertical format to fit the book page, along with a number of other works I painted for the first, 1998 illustrated edition of the book. When, a few years later, a larger illustrated edition of The Silmarillion was proposed, and horizontally oriented illustrations (so-called “landscape format”) were to be included now, I took the opportunity to re-paint the illustration as it was first conceived. The result was the work on offer here, with its compelling depiction of the fugitive Luthien being borne away on the back of the great hound Huan."

The medium is gouache on illustration board, and the image size is 13” x 10”

This piece is listed starting at £1250 and other similar pieces from the series of 12 plates sold for £4000 each, this is the last one remaining and was not previously available for sale with the other illustrations of the plate series.
