J.R.R. Tolkien: Of Words and Worlds by Mark Wolf (11.03.09 by Pieter Collier) - Comments

It is not often that I'm impressed by a book cover design. I'm working in a design company and see a lot of covers being designed; most of the time I like the simple covers best. When I was looking at the upcoming Tolkien publications the following cover immediatly asked my full attention, J.R.R. Tolkien: of words and worlds by Mark Wolf. It features an impressive photograph of Tolkien and a simple, but perfect, design. I just love it!

The second surprise was that I already knew that book, it was released last year in the Leaders in Action series by Cumberland House Publishing, who have also published a book on C.S. Lewis called Not a Tame Lion: The Spiritual Legacy of C.S. Lewis written by Terry W. Glaspey and George Grant in 1996. So this means the book has done well and now sees a reprint, redesign and will be republished at the end of this month.

Mark Wolf interview

Last year I did an interview with the author Mark Wolf, just before the book was first released. It is always nice to re-read Mark Wolf's answers and hear him talk about the book once again.

The book

"JRR Tolkien: Of Words and Worlds" is a trenchant examination of the life, works, influence, and lasting legacy of J.R.R. Tolkien. With "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, a permanent resident in many people's list of all-time favourites, and his imaginary world becoming one of the most successful and influential film franchises of all time, J.R.R. Tolkien remains a leading figure in both popular culture and academia.

It provides a penetrating insight into tolkien's life, with particular focus on his imagination and imaginary worlds - which he called his 'subcreation' - and how they influenced and, in turn, were influenced by his faith.

This volume addresses tolkien's lasting legacy, including how he almost single-handedly revived the fantasy genre; how he has influenced dozens of the world's most successful writers, designers, film-makers; and why his books continue to be an inspiration to millions of fans around the world.
