Tolkien was and is especially known as a writer, but next to being a great writer Tolkien also was a great artist and illustrator. While Tolkiens books are read daily by thousands of people, only a few people know about his art. Their are though a great deal of books showing original artwork by Tolkien. Who hasn't seen the original dustjacket from 'the hobbit'? Well, this drawing was made by Tolkien himself. Also a lot of illustrations inside the hobbit and LOTR are originally drawn by Tolkien.

During the years a lot of drawings and illustrations of Tolkien have been published on postcards, calendars, posters,... but these items i put in another section (see Miscellanea).

Described here are books containing several paintings or drawings by Tolkien or books containing artwork inspired by tolkien's work.
