In de Ban van de Ring. Deel 1: De Reisgenoten. Translated by Max Schuchart. Utrecht/Antwerpen: Het Spectrum, 1956. 22.5 x 14.5, 467 + [1] pp., hardback.

On the dust-jacket Tolkiens name was wrongly spelled "J.J.R. Tolkien".

The book is bound in brown linen. The lower cover has in the middle the Spectrum logo in a red panel. Stamped in gilt on the spine there are 3 rules, 'J.R.R. Tolkien' against a red panel, 3 rules, 'In de ban / van / de ring', 3 rules, 'De / reis / genoten/ *' against a red panel, and 3 rules; and at the bottom 'Spectrum' against a red panel, with 3 rules above and below. All text in uppercast.

The dust-jacket is olive green. The lower cover gives the name of the author wrongly spelled as J.J.R. Tolkien, and the tittle of the book. It shows a red flame under a big eye, and a drawing by Cees Kelfkens of four hobbits and two black riders (see image, click for enlargement). The spine has 'J.J.R. Tolkien', a burning eye, 'In de ban / van / de ring / *', De Reisgenoten [running down] and at the bottom 'Spectrum'.

The book is a library copy showing all the typical damages that come with library editions. Has some library stamps inside, some pages show turned corners, but text block is still clean.

No foxing and some minor stains on several pages.

Back of the boards has cello tape and some writing and protective cello tape put over the boards and a typical green library sticker, and a small library sticker saying Tol2 to the spine bottom.

The dust jacket was recovered from another 1st edition Fellowship to protect this book. It shows damages to the corners and edges. A yellowed cello tape is stuck over a tear.

A small newspaper article has been glued inside on the half title page, mentioning P.A. Hekstra giving a lecture on Tolkien. With small picture of both Tolkien and Hekstra. Here also a mistake is written, it says J.A.R. Tolkien.

This book was bought as a library copy by P.A. Hekstra and then later had it autographed by J.R.R. Tolkien on the front free paper during a visit of Tolkien to Holland.

Small owners signature on half title page.
