The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by The Children's Book Club, by arrangement with George Allen & Unwin.

Printed by the Unwin Brothers Ltd. in Woking. One of 3000 copies of the 1942 3rd impression, printed for the Children's Book Club of the bookseller Foyles.

Bound in yellow, gilt-stamped cloth over boards, with a dust-jacket (which Tolkien thought hideous) in black, orange, and white, featuring a cartoon of a dandified hobbit. Tolkien commented, "Surely the paper wasted on that hideous dust-cover could have been better used." A scarce and desirable copy for the collector.

No color frontispiece, as issued, all mono plates in excellent condition. Produced in conformity with the war time standard's, with the distinctive 'War Time Economy Standards' title verso.

Has no previous owners names, writing or inscriptions. Pages are clean and bright, no tears or stains. Top edge a little dusty and soiled. The spine is faded with some rubbing to the top and bottom, has worn thru the cloth at the top, a couple of splits to the cloth along the spine fold corner areas. Corners of the boards are a little bent and rubbed, but not worn thru the cloth.

A very scarce collectable copy, provided with a facsimile dustjacket and custom marbled paper slipcase to show and protect this 1st Edition of the Hobbit.
