Tolkien Calendar 2009 and Tolkien Diary 2009: THE SILMARILLION (13.06.08 by Pieter Collier) - Comments

After the Tolkien calendar for The Lord of the Rings (2007) and The Children of Hurin (2008), the 2009 Calendar will focus on The Silmarillion and will feature illustrations from the revised illustration edition by Ted Nasmith. While we celebrated The Silmarillion's 30th anniversary last year, it is great to see it is now in the picture again.

In this article I told a bit more about the artist Ted Nasmith and released a small interview I did with the artist in September 2007 where we talked about the Tolkien Calendar 2009.

There are no 'new' paintings, although none of the pictures have been in a calendar before and really benefit from being seen at the larger size.

Very few people who bought the first illustrated Silmarillion have bought the revised one, so I think the paintings will be a revelation to many fans.

The cover of this year's Tolkien Calendar looks stunning and the diary will match the calendar. The diary will feature a note written by the artist.

Of course, like we are used from Harper Collins Publishers, there will be published a reprint of the illustrated edition of The Silmarillion. So that one can enjoy the calendar images in large size and have a book with the same images to enjoy the book itself.

the revised edition of the illustrated The Silmarillion as published in 2004
This time, it will not a new edition, but a new printing of the same illustrated edition as was published in 2004.

The 2004 edition contains more than twice the number of illustrations as the one published in 1998, by the way.

The Tolkien Diary usually contains the same artwork as the Calendar, and that's the case here again. I have offered to provide
It normally will also contain some of Ted Nasmith's preliminary sketches as secondary art, which is something I'm looking forward to... since Ted Nasmith's sketches are very wonderful.
