The Hobbit pocket edition to celebrate its 75th anniversary (18.09.12 by Pieter Collier) - Comments

To celebrate The Hobbit’s 75th anniversary of publication, a pocket-sized hardback of J.R.R. Tolkien’s timeless classic was released (a tiny bit early) in October of last year. it is however perfect for little Hobbits everywhere and the perfect gift to anyone who has not read the book - or the perfect copy to fresh up your memory before going to see the movie adaptation later this year!

With 110 by 151 mm
this can indeed be described as a pocket. It is the very first time a hardback pocket version of The Hobbit with tolkien's cover has been released in this size, and you have to admit, it looks great!

I guess this will be the best selling edition for all people who want to have a copy of The Hobbit closeby or which to read the book well before the release of The Hobbit movies. I believe it is a nice extra edition next to the already existing 70th anniversary edition of the Hobbit.

Most of you will already know the story, but the book is about the hobbit Bilbo Baggins who enjoys a quiet and contented life, with no desire to travel far from the comforts of home; then one day the wizard Gandalf and a band of dwarves arrive unexpectedly and enlist his services – as a burglar. Bilbo’s life is never to be the same again.

Perfect for gift giving, this is a beautiful hardcover pocket edition of The Hobbit, commemorating 75 years since the publication of this beloved book.

The Hobbit Pocket Edition

The Hobbit became an instant success when it was first published in 1937, and 75 years later Tolkien’s epic tale of elves, dwarves, trolls, goblins, myth, magic and adventure, with its reluctant hero Bilbo Baggins, has lost none of its appeal. Now, for the first time, the classic hardback edition is available in a one-off special pocket-sized edition.

To be honest I had expected a truly nice and spectacular edition to be released this year, but all we receive are some film tie-in editions and a paperback 75th anniversary edition, which I hope to review in an article real soon. Still with the announcement of Tolkien week, something I had not heard about before in the many years of being a Tolkien fan, I thought it was nice to once again show this anniversary edition of The Hobbit, not only because I like the edition but especially to make a little contribution to all the festivities.

In the end in a few days we celebrate both the anniversary of Bilbo and Frodo and in one go 75 years of The Hobbit. Amazing that a book can be still so attractive and reach massive audience after such a mature age! I have just finished reading The Hobbit out loud to my kids and I have probably enjoyed it as much as my children. It is truly a book that is meant to be read to children and while this is once again a new generation, it touches them and takes them on a journey, opens up a brand new world, give them a glance of fairy and magic,... truly The Hobbit was the beginning of high fantasy!

Featuring the distinctive cover illustration painted by Tolkien himself, plus his own drawings in the book, this edition will be the perfect gift for little Hobbits everywhere!
