The Hobbit is coming as are the film tie-in publications (07.06.12 by Pieter Collier) - Comments

The Hobbit, first published by George Allen & Unwin in the UK in 1937 and in the U.S. in 1938, has been a perennial bestseller. Since then, it has gone on to sell many millions of copies in more than 60 languages, the latest being in Irish and soon in Latin as well.

In this 75th anniversary year of its publication, is set to captivate another generation of readers. The major drive for this will be The Hobbit movie adaptations by Peter Jackson.

At least five titles will be released by all major Tolkien publishing companies early November, in advance of the December 14 debut of the first film.
They include, next to the usual calendars and diaries, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Visual Companion by Jude Fisher, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Official Movie Guide by Brian Sibley, The World of the Hobbits, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Activity Book and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Photo Storybook by Paddy Kempshall.

The second film, has been retitled The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. And the third and final film, which now takes on the title The Hobbit: There and Back Again, will arrive in theaters on July 18, 2014.

Inspired by the two films based on The Hobbit, the companion books are a fantastic way for fans of the world of Middle-earth to immerse themselves in the film experience. The detailed tie-in books will bring The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to life in an in-depth and imaginative way. There will be books for adults and kids, small paperbacks and nice looking hardbacks... yes their will be Hobbit movie images all over the place! It will be a global publishing event long to remember.

Case you missed it, some more about The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and the other two The Hobbit movies

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of three films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit. The second film, has been retitled The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. And the third and final film, which now takes on the title The Hobbit: There and Back Again. All three films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

The screenplays for The hobbit franchise are by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson. Jackson is also producing the films, together with Fran Walsh and Carolynne Cunningham. The executive producers are Alan Horn, Ken Kamins, Toby Emmerich and Zane Weiner, with Boyens serving as co-producer.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins. Also reprising their roles from "The Lord of the Rings" movies are: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; Orlando Bloom as Legolas; and Andy Serkis as Gollum.

The ensemble cast also includes (in alphabetical order) Richard Armitage, John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Evangeline Lilly, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O'Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan Turner.

As you can see this will become a big movie, with probably the highest expectations ever put to a film release. Already in April Harper Collins announced it received the rights to produce some film tie-in, Houghton Mifflin (even being in trouble) followed a little later. Mariner Books, a division of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, now seem to have taken up the publishing of the movie tie-ins. Of course there are no images available, but don't worry you will see more then enough of them when the time comes. But here is the list of some of the books that start to show up. I'm probably just going to pre-order them right now, since by the time The Hobbit movies come I will have many more interesting books to buy.
