| Dark Brown Leather rebind. No publication page but can be identified as a 3rd edition [1942] by the typing error on page 85 'under under the mountains' and the single colour picture, as called for under wartime publishing requirements. There is a small library stamp on the back of the picture but I don't think it particularly detracts. Pages slightly yellowed with age. This copy has been rebound into a beautiful, thick, leather binding. It was once a library copy. It is the rare third impression that only had a print run of 1500 copies. Now, it looks fantastic on the book shelf; the pictures do not do it justice! The binding is tight. The pages have been shaved and no longer show the soiling to the outer pages - please see the photos. This does not affect the text or the page numbers in any way. The maps look great at the front and back of the book. Sadly, the copyright page was torn out (it was an ex-library copy) and the endpapers have been replaced to give a white, bright look to the book. It is easy to identify as a third impression for two reasons: a) Chapter five is in its original state before Tolkien made the changes. b) Pg. 85 had a text fault. "Far under under the mountains" was changed to "Far under the mountains" by the fourth impression. A rare early edition. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested.
