| The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by George Allen & Unwin, 1954/55 1st UK Edition. The Fellowship of the Ring is a 2nd impression. The Two Towers is a 2nd impression. The Return of the King is a 1st impression published and dated 1955, the true 1st State with the signature mark '4' and the infamous slipped type. The set is fully rebound in Crimson Morocco Leather. All original maps are present and in Near Fine condition, tipped into the rear along with the original spines of the books. An extraordinary set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. The set is further characterized by marbled endpapers, all edges trimmed and gilded, with raised bands, gilt tooling, and gilt ruled edges. A beautiful design, by one of the UK's finest binders. All are very clean and bright with no foxing to any pages, and with no writing or signatures. Fantastic looking set, with a classic design.
